In the days leading up until the Oscars, I'll be featuring the nominees in the various visual categories. This week, I'll be looking at the nominees for Best Costume Design. This category plays a huge role in film making, as costumes can make or break the authenticity of a film, convey things that words cannot, or just add to the overall magic on the big screen. Today's featured movie is Across the Universe.

Though some criticized the overall job Julie Taymor did converting the beloved Beatles songbook into a musical, it is hard to deny the quality of the film's feast for the eyes. Taymor became one of the most innovative forces on Broadway when she brought the Disney animated film The Lion King to the stage in a way no one had ever seen before (think: giant puppets). So it's no suprise that the costumes in this film reach beyond the traditional period piece decadence and into effects that include background dancers dressed in larger-than-life, puppet-like pieces. The overall effect is extremely, well, trippy — which is exactly what a movie musical nostalgic for the psychedelic mood of the '60s should invoke. No wonder Oscar took notice.

I hope Across the Universe wins... it was so far out and trippy! it's unlike any other movie and deserves an Oscar!
1awe, yay!
2i loved this movie : )
I hope they show it here in Aus =/
3Nothing in particular to add about the movie (obviously, as haven't seen it) but i'm so glad that people who work on movies BEHIND the scenes are getting some discussion and cred =) not because i do, although i'd like to, but like buzz said, i think they (eg costume designers) can help to make or break the movie/show. i had heard all the hype about the costumes in The Lion King, but just didn't understand how it could actually be so amazing until I went and saw the show.
This is probably the prettiest and most visually arresting movie since Moulin Rouge. It definitely deserves something!
4My favorite movie of now!!!! It's so beautiful!
5Good for them - I saw it four times in theatres. Partially because of my love for The Beatles, and partially because of my love for Julie Taymor. A great movie.
6I hope AtU wins. It was my favorite movie this year and deserves as many awards as it can get!
7LOVE this movie! Great costumes, but more importantly, who could resist Jim Sturgess????
xooo
8I love this movie, it's one of my favorites. I hope it wins !
