The Grammy Awards celebrate their 50th anniversary tonight with musical performances, tributes to the show's history, and — of course — dozens upon dozens of awards. Yet right as the awards reach their half-century milestone, there's renewed debate over whether the awards are still relevant given the number of other music awards shows, the rise of independent labels whose artists rarely get recognized with Grammys, and the slumping record sales throughout the music industry.
When I asked a while back which entertainment awards you trusted most, the Grammys came in dead last. Do you think they're still relevant at all?

The show is great and the performances are always fun, but it seems like it's really, really easy to win one these days. lol
1They are a TOTAL JOKE. With few exceptions, only homogenized, manufactured music is honored. It's rare that someone worthy is ever even nominated.
I haven't watched in years; I can barely even read the nominees list without getting pissed off.
2I never watch it, but will record tonights show to watch the Love/Across the Universe Beatles thing.
3As for the awards themselves it's always the same crap over and over. No diversity. Boring.
I love watching the Grammy's. I always have. I remember in the 90's when Celine Dion would win all the time, lol. Those were the days.
Then for awhile it was all about rap, because that's what was popular, but it annoyed me.
I think tonight's ceremony will be good.
4I think it's a joke. My favorite artists are rarely recognized, if ever, so I have no reason to watch it anyway. There is no diversity -- it's all just commercial garbage made for the masses; it's very rare for truly inspiring or innovative music to be even nominated.
5Please... the only thing that matters to the Grammy's are record sales, which is so irrelevant to art it hurts. It's not like record sales are even an indication of worth, they're just a reflection of what artists the record companies bother to push on you.
6I agree, it's a JOKE!
7Im only watching them to see the Foo Fighters play, otherwise I wouldn't have a reason too.
8There seems to be little relationship between the quality of a song/record/artist and the Grammy Awards. It is a celebration of an industry, and that industry is selling music.
9i think that they are still relevant. i think that the main issue is that most people only focus on popular modern music which is what we hear on the radio - but it's not the only music that's being produced each year. there are so many genres being reached to and so much new talent that people forget about it. you expect to see the kanyes and JTs etc get honored without remembering that it's not just our generation that puts out music and appreciates it all the time
10it kind of upsets me. there is such great music being created outside of this commercial poo. i dont want to see beyonce dancing without pants, i want to see the strokes playing preferably with pants. i want to see regina spektor playing with pants. its definitely a joke. hello, as i type, umbrella is winning a grammy. UMBRELLA!? do i even need to explain!?
11Its pretty much a joke. Im with every one else that they really do not recognize a wide variety of artists. There are only a handful (if even that)of artists that are recognized at the Grammies that I have respect for
12*Grammys
13i dunno if they even show it in australia anymore lol
14I think some of the performances were great but the voting must be paid off or paid for. Amy Winehouse? are you kidding me she can't sing she can't dance, she has no rythem. those are the ugiest tatoos I have ever seen on a woman. The album sucks how could that happen? I thnk she could be a guy in drag. She had no business being nominated with any of those other people. she has no talant I have heard better singers at the sudhi place on friday night and better looking women at my local walmart Thats why they don't matter when somebody with no talant wins album of the year.
15She won record of the year
Amy actually is really talented. Drugs have really screwed her up and sadly that has been her best performance in awhile. If you do a search of some of her older stuff (like from her first album Frank)I think you will get a better idea of her singing ability.
And btw what does her looks or tattoos have to do with her talent or winning awards
16The Grammys are one big joke, and they have been for years. I don't think they show them outside the States anymore. It's all about record sales.
17The Grammys suck.
18Some years they get it right, but sometimes they seem out of touch
19First of all, it was the 50th anniversary for the GRAMMYs, so they wanted to include artists from ALL genres and highlight those people who have won in the past as a tribute to the musical legacy they've given us.
Secondly, the GRAMMY awards have no connection to record sales. If people took the time to EDUCATE themselves they'd realize that the awards are voted on by 12,000 voting members who are required to be music professionals with a minimum of 6 credits on a commercially distributed album. This is what sets the GRAMMYs apart from other music awards - it is an artistic award voted on by peers. Last night was proof - Herbie Hancock, Ashley Clevellan, Vince Gill. None of these albums enjoyed widespread commercial success like the other nominees in their categories, but they won because they are exceptional pieces of musical work.
Thirdly, regarding relevancy, the GRAMMY organization is taking huge steps to include the younger generation and college students into their membership. I don't know how much more dieversity you want when you have artists like Feist, Brad Paisley, Herbie Hancock, and Tine Turner all performing on the same stage.
Fourthly, the GRAMMYs are the one organization among all the others that put on awards shows who are philanthopic in nature. The organization provides education in schools, has year round events in its 12 Chapter cities, and funds MusiCares which offers financial help to thousands of musicians every year.
Stop taking the music you listen to on the radio for granted and realize that it takes blood, sweat, and tears to produce the catchy song that occasionally gets stuck in your head. The GRAMMYs are an admirable organization who should be respected and applauded for the good work that they do, and the fact that they recognize true and real artistry in music.
20I HATE award shows. They are all dreadfully boring.
21I definitely think they are still relevant to those in the industry and a big honor to receive one. It would be like saying the Oscars were no longer relevant to the film industry. Like someone said before, it is honor given to musicians by other musicians, like Academy Awards are awarded to film makers by other film makers. I'll tell you who isn't relevant in music anymore. That honor goes to MTV. They should really stop having the Video Music Awards if they aren't going to even play videos. Even TRL should end because I caught about 30 minutes of that show yesterday, and boy it was a mess. There would be some videos they wouldn't even show. They would just announce what number they were and then move on. And they had a musical guest on to perform, and they aired the first 30 seconds of the performance, went to commercial, came back from commercial and you got to hear the last 10 seconds of the song. Really MTV? I liked the days when it was just Carson Daly and the crew. They had a some guests and played most, if not all, of the video. None of those screaming "shout-out" loving people. And I can even remember back in the 80's when all they had were music videos. Even in the 90's there were videos, and the shows didn't come on until 10 pm, and they lasted for like 2 hours and then back to videos.
22Tangent I know. Sorry!
