This year's mixed bag of Super Bowl commercials included some cute, funny ones and others that were baffling, bad or downright offensive. Seriously, how did the SalesGenie panda spot make it on TV at all? It's just wrong. To see what else made my "worst of 2008 Super Bowl commercials" list, read more.
Pandas thing, SalesGenie:
More and more viewings of this commercial only manage to confuse me further. Why do some of the pandas have this outrageously offensive accent but the all-knowing guru panda (who wears a turban and pink lipstick?) does not? Why are there baby pandas at the end? Was their panda marriage re-ignited by SalesGenie? How is it possible that this commercial made it on the air? So very puzzling.
Planters: "Perfume"
So, girls who aren't pretty can only get the boys if they rub cashews on their skin. Gross. Weird. Not funny. Also, the Dell ad for Product Red had basically the same premise, but that guy wasn't offensively ugly — just vaguely nerdy and normal-looking. I love me some double standards.
Bud Light Carlos Mencia: "Picking Up Chicks":
What did I learn from this ad? That chicks love foreigners? That white boys should fake accents so they can stare at women's boobs? That women don't like it when people make derogatory comments about their thighs? And that's all supposed to make me want beer?
Bridgestone: Richard Simmons "Headlights":
Richard Simmons generally gives me the creepy feelings in the tummy, but when there's a seemingly evil person speeding a car toward him — also, get out of the road, Richard Simmons! What are you doing? — it's downright crazy-making.
Garmin: "Napoleon"
This one wasn't bad so much as baffling and obscure. The reason Napoleon always kept his hand in his jacket was because that's where he kept his GPS device? Um, OK. But if you're a mapping company, is Napoleon really the leader you want promoting your product? Sure, go ahead and follow him; not my fault if you end up dead at Waterloo.

The Sales Genie one was just the worst ... followed closely by the Bridgestone. ICK!
1The Sales Genie one was awful! In fact, minutes before I hopped on here, my co-workers and I were just talking about how offensive it was over lunch! Crazy!
The Richard Simmons one, however, made me giggle. I laughed harder at Alice Cooper and the snake though. I don't know why I found that funny, but I did. What are you doing with that snake in the middle of the road, crazy boy!!!
2anything with Carlos Mencia in it is just terrible. he's so intent on being offensive that it's laughable (unlike his jokes). i'm so sick of him!
and i think i've already mentioned how terrible the SalesGenie ads were. just downright racist!
3I thought both of the Salesgenie ads were EXTREMELY offensive. It was like a movie from the 50's where all of the minorities were horribly stereotyped. There must be some morons working for that company!
4I agree. The Sales Genie ad is the worst. Actually, most of the ads were disappointing.
5I wasn't fond of any of those except for the Planters one. I love the song they used from "10 Thing I Hate About You". The rest were pretty lame.
6Oh, and I agree nicachica - I hatteeee Carlos Mencia. Nothing he ever says is funny. It's always stereotypical, unfunny racial jokes.
7I totally agree, Buzz. Ling Ling? Seriously? Did you hear the offensive accents? I thought it was a joke.
8Thank you thank you thank you for pointing out how offensive some of these were, especially the sexist planters peanuts one. Women watch the Super Bowl too! Does that mean we deserve to be belittled??
9I am more amazed by the superbowl commercial infatuation than the fact that the Giants upset the Patriots (you know the actual game that no one has commented on
It costs $3 million per 30 seconds. That is nutz! Where does all that money go? Obviously, as
you have pointed out buzz, not into the content of the actual commercials. In any case, I boycotted the superbowl this year, read a book, and caught the highlights on sportscenter. w00t!
10I think that I heard somewhere that sales genie was purposely trying to make the worst commercial ever. Even the stupidest most ignorant of people know that commercial was offensive
I thought the Planter's commercial was funny and not offensive at all. The girl was working it....she embraced her looks and the nutty smell and was strutting down the street. Just look at what a normal woman does today to look good and all she had to do was rub a cashew on.
11I loved the Planters one.. it was cute
I agree Jillness.
12Carlos "Men-steal-a" sucks. So did his commercial.
13The name is JESSness
......get it together people
14Sales genie was not funny. I gave the planters commercial half a chuckle and the Carlos Mencia one I didn't care for.
15salesgenie was ridiculous. I liked the Bridgestone commercial with the squirrel and all the animals screaming though. I missed the Richard Simmons one. I must have also missed the Carlos Mencia commercial. I thought Justin Timberlake was great, and the etrade baby commercials were funny.
16I hated that Sales Genie ad! Horrible! Although I do like the Planters commercial, I thought it was funny. I also loved the American Idol ad with Ben Roethlisberger singing! So funny and he his so hot! Love football season.
17^ I meant "he is so hot." not he his so hot; I really need to check my spelling more often, lol.
18sorry JessNess, but there's a JillNess on here so it creates some confusion!
19Two words: Baby vomit. Two more: Worst commercial.
Talking babies are never cute. Vomit is never cute. Put the two together and you have the uncutest thing that ever did uncute.
*shudders* ETrade, you are dead to me now.
20nicachica- you dont have to apologize but thank you. It can get annoying though specially since I was the first _ness. I do understand the confusion when we are both commenting on the same story
