Tom Petty took the field at the Super Bowl today, performing a set of his best-known songs including "American Girl" and "Free Fallin'" for the cheering crowd. Do you think he rocked? Or were Petty and his Heartbreakers showing their age?

It was classic, but not very entertaining...
1What the hell? When was the last time they did anything? I mean, great songs but not tonight. Really, could they have picked a more dated act??
2This half time show sucked! I was very disappointed.
3I was bored. mean, classic songs, but it just wasn't interesting.
Please get U2 and Green Day up there to do Saints Are Coming again!!! They played it at halftime at the Superdome one game and it was WAY better than this.
4I will forever love Tom Petty. He can do no wrong. I would rather see some classic songs being performed live than some cheesy light show and lip syncing.
5i love tom petty but it wasn't like last year when Prince rocked it!
i wish tom had given the FCC the finger and sung "last dance with mary jane."
6It was better than Paula Abdul's new song
7At least there wasn't any "wardrobe malfunctions"!
8I thought he looked kind-of John Lennonesqe. At the very least, that was a lot of 70's facial hair.
9loved it...wish i could have been there.
10i seriously think super bowl should allow MTV to do the half time again. like who cares about Janet's boob anymore? get over it!
11It was laaaaaame and boring.
12I like tom petty. but for the half time show? comeee onnnn!!!
13and PS i totally agree with angelinemarie!!
14I thought Tom Petty sounded great. Could it have been more entertaining...sure but Tom Petty has never been the rock out type. The part I found entertaining were all these 14 year old kids trying to dance and sing along and they had absolutely no clue. Also they had the camera on this girl who was freak dancing and I was thinking do you know who you are dancing too?
15LOVED it! Especially Free Fallin! GOOOO GIANTS!!!
16i like the songs they played but not for the super bowl halftime i honest to God fell asleep it was soooo boring they need to have shows that rev you up not put you to sleep but it was better then when paul mccartney played but then again that doesn't take much
17I liked it!
18i didn't know who he was but it was ok. it definitely wasn't exciting or anything.
19I like Tom Petty, but I had my own halftime show with the Beach Boys and my ipod in my kitchen.
20LOVED IT! I was dancing all over the house. Tom will always ROCK!
21I sang along all through halftime while I was washing dishes from all the yummy (but messy) superbowl food we made.
I don't think there is a current artist that is strong enough to do the Superbowl, one that would appeal to more than one generation. I think they would have chosen a different act if there was. For example, I don't mind Rhianna--I feel like she is probably one of the major acts these days--but the majority of people at the game aren't going to know who she is.
They need to get an old artist and a newer one together a'la Aerosmith and *Nsync/Britney/Nelly. I thought that was "super" fun back in the day!
22I liked the songs and they are classic, but I wish it had been a little more exciting. I was bummed they didn't do "Last Dance with Mary Jane." There has to be some middle ground, right? I mean, we don't have to see Janet's boob (even though I didn't even notice it at the time), but could use something a little more current than Tom Petty.
23Hey, is he 80 years old. Obviously the Patriots watched it at halftime. They were sleep walking through the second half.
24I'm probably gonna get tarred and feathered for this, but my first thought was "Wow, he's well preserved".
Honest to goodness, though I was happy to hear "Runnin' down a dream" (the only TP song I really like), whose idea was it to have him do the Halftime? Where did it come from? Does he have anything new coming out? Touring? Anything? Iunno, maybe I'd just have been a bit more entertained had they given an act with something in the pipeline the slot, rather than this. Most companies won't show a commercial that's been airing for years during the Superbowl, why give us music that's been out for that long?
25Give me classy and simple Tom Petty with good music over a glitz and glammed halftime show with crappy music any day.
26I thought they sounded good and were good. However, it was boring. I like when other music people join the band for the night and they play songs that are not theirs. One thing I will admit -- I would much rather have Tom Petty than any present music today including Justin Timberlake or any rap artist (if you can call it that). At least Tom petty sings and plays music not lip sing like artist today.
27I would much rather see a class like Tom Petty sing rockin' songs than see some lip synching out of step artist collaborate with a hip hopper and do something that only adds shock value. kudos to the superbowl planners for actually thinking about quality over hype.
28i guess it was ok - he played songs that i knew so that was ok - but it's sad that now they are so afraid that something will happen during the show that they won't put on HOT artists. the networks need to remember who their audience is and skew to them and take a chance....
29I loved it. I've been a Tom Petty fan since I watched music videos on Night Tracks a long time ago.
I think it's awesome that the SuperBowl is having music veterans like Tom Petty perform during the halftime shows. They are REAL and they sounded GREAT without having to lip synch their own songs. I would much rather spend the money to go see the Super Bowl and halftime show watching groups like Tom Petty perform than see another Janet Jackson fiasco.
30I loved it. For anyone who hasn't heard it, the album that Petty put out last year was awesome.
31My boyfriend and I thought we had switched to the National Geographic Civilization Network by mistake when the show began... Very Stone Age-ish and boring.
32I LOVE Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and definitely enjoyed the performance during halftime. I know some people may think it's "boring" but he just does his thing. That's what I love about him, he just plays his music and does what he does, and if you don't like it you don't have to listen.
No, it wasn't Prince from last year, but he's a whole different kind of artist. That's another thing I enjoy - getting to see all sorts of different artists do their thing in such a huge venue. (At least I knew all the words to the songs this time! For a classic rock sort of girl like me, that's refreshing.)
Props to the SuperBowl people for two years of great halftime performances!
33Loved it. There used to be way too many stars at the Super Bowl half time show, one after another coming out and too many lights and whistles, it was always bad and distracting. Tom P is classic, he sounded amazing, he wasn't lip synching, it was a great show all around.
34It's Tom freakin Petty!
Petty rocks. Sooo much better than Prince last year, imo. Now I know people love their Prince, but really, Prince at a FOOTBALL game is a little too much. Petty's good ol' classic American rock & you gotta love it. I think they rocked the halftime show.
35I only watched it because my husbands Boss is Stan Lynch the ORIGINAL drummer in the heartbreakers.
The new drummer is terrible.
The show was boring
36I didn't even watch. We TiVoed the game and started it a little late, but of course weren't going to fast forward through either the game or the commercials. The only thing we hit FF on was the halftime show.
37I liked the halftime show, but I wish he played some of his more popular songs.
38I was pretty much underwhelmed by his performance. True, he has good songs, but I don't think they really represent "2008" and it's the 2008 superbowl.
P.S. I work for a music website and word on the street is that he lip-synced 90% of the show anyway.
39i thought it was great. you can tell he is a seasoned professional who consistently knows how to put on a good show. it isn't about the glitz or the booty shakin' girls its what it should be about...the music and simplisity.
40Of course he is showing his age, he is damn near 60!
He did Highway Companion in 2006, and just announced a new album out this year, and a North American tour starting in May.
I saw him summer before last with the Black Crowes in a sold out show he rocked!
41Since when did the half time show at the Superbowl define the year?!
42Loved it! My daughter & I danced all over the living room while hubby & older sister laughed at us.
43I totally agree with thesounds04.
44By the looks of the voting, all of you naysayers of Petty are in an extreme minority. Tom Petty freakin rocks!! I'm 27 (and only just) and have listened and loved Petty since Jr. High & Highschool. And NO, Tom Petty did not freakin lip-synch 90% of his act Gigill! Besides, how exactly would one do that? Like not sing 2 of the choruses and then decide to sing the third? You can hear the man say "watch this here" before the powerchord breakdown of "Free Fallin" plus Petty is so anti-lip synching and neo-pop crap that he would never do such a thing. I've seen him 4 times and the last tour there were teeny-bopper aged girls sitting behind me screaming their fool heads off. TP rocked last night. That is all. Oh, and "thesounds04" I also agree with you...and you are hot. ok, now that is all, haha.
45It was alright. For Tom Petty fans it was probably great. Blah for me.
46soooo boring. I understand there are tom petty fans out there but it's the superbowl i'm expecting something big and spectacular.
47I was hoping and PRAYING justin timberlake would come out and give us a wardrobe malfunction for some form of excitement.
tom petty and the heartbreakers are great and have some amazing songs...but for the halftime show i didn't feel like they fit in.....they just seemed out of place....and the show was just eh...
48The last few years have been
's like Prince, Rolling Stones, and Paul
McCartney, I for one was thrilled that Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers got a turn.
lol
49They seemed humbled by the experience, and they even wore suits!
Loved it! Although I was the only one at the party who watched it.
