As soon as I saw Cloverfield I knew immediately that there would be sequels. Making one stand-alone video of a Manhattan monster attack means there could be any number of other videos out there with similar footage — from the New York attack, or from other cities the monster demolished. Basically, all they need to come up with are the various reasons for people to be using a handheld camera.
This easy setup for a sequel combined with the fact that Cloverfield cost $25 million to make and raked in $46 million over its opening weekend alone has now motivated Paramount to team up with director Matt Reeves again for a Cloverfield sequel. Variety states today that the Cloverfield sequel might even be Reeves next project.
While I know I totally called this, there's a part of me that already feels a pending weariness toward the Cloverfield movies. Part of the satisfaction with Cloverfield was the intrigue surrounding it — the sequel(s) will have to consistently think of ways to surprise us. Also, they may want to figure out how to avoid that shaky-cam nausea.

I can't comment on the sequel because I haven't seen the first one yet, but it does look like it's going to be good to me.
1Ugh. I pretty much agree with you Buzz. I knew they would do this. But it's not necessary. The reason I loved this movie so much is because it didn't try to explain things like most movies do. You knew only as much as the characters knew, and that's what made it so scary and real. The sequel will blow.

3i knew they would do this....i really didn't like the first cloverfield and the fact that they are making a sequel is annoying.
4Eh - I really loved the movie (but not so much the kid that ran through the aisle and right into my legs) but not sure about a sequel. What was so great about the movie was the unknown. Now that it's known -- well, boring. Although - I would love a real movie about what exactly went down. Sort of the governments POV on the whole Cloverfield thing. Without giving too much away, I'm pretty sure there was a point in the movie where an army guy said something along the lines of "if they know they didn't tell me/us."
As for the shaky-cam nausea - I suffer very easily from motion sickness and this wasn't too bad. Only one or two points in the movie where I was ready to get up and walk out for a few minutes. But all and all - not as bad as I thought it would be.
5i'm excited for a sequel. jj abrams said he wanted this monster to become the US' godzilla so i'm not surprised, i'm just glad it made enough money for them to do a second. im hoping for some more insight into the story of the monster - the backstory that's playing out online seems interesting. if they can work that into the sequel i'd be happier than just watching it from a handy cam POV.

7according to imdb, at the very end of the credits you can hear someone say "help us" but when it's played backwards it says "it's still alive". creepy or what!
Also, the whole POV camera is great and definitly adds to the creepiness but i think everyone would benefit if there was a tie-in with gravol!
I'd heard rumors of a sequel. Guess it's not just a rumor anymore.

11i didn't even wnat to go see the first one - still haven't seen it - so i don't know if it's even worth it to make a second one.
it's the blair witch all over again...they made the first one for nothing - it did AMAZING and then they made a sequel which tanked. now is it smart to repeat history?
12So sad that they're doing this! What made this movie so great was the "I'm just filming this as it happens" aspect. How can they effectively pull the same stunt with a sequel?

16I absolutely loved Cloverfield. A sequel would totally ruin the story, but knowing me, I'd have to go see it.
