With 10 Slots, Should Star Trek Get a Best Picture Nomination?

Now that the Academy will be selecting 10 Best Picture Oscar nominees instead of five, it opens up the possibility for certain films to be recognized that otherwise might be passed over. So far this year a few movies have resonated with critics and audiences alike, and perhaps none as much as Star Trek. Do you think Star Trek is worthy of a Best Picture nomination?

Yes .. Star Trek is very Oscar worthy .. Prediction: 6 Nominations Best Picture Best Actor (Zachery Quinto) Best Special Effects Best Script Best Director Best Supporting Actor (Karl Urban) Yes .. Star Trek is going to the Super Bowl

I agree with Ms JTKirk; Wrath Of Khan. A very satisfying movie on many levels. Kept you on the edge of your seat. Star Trek (New Beginnings) is a masterpiece. On every conceivable level. This movie could have been .. how shall I say this .. merely a repeat of things that have gone before. A cop out. This ain't your momma's Star Trek .. It was a truly special outing .. Trek's answer to Star Wars Well Folks .. A slight glimpse @ the future .. It goes without saying that a sequel is on the way. Christian Bale as Khan .. Whoopi Goldberg on the way back as Guinnan Kinda neat .. Hopefully more of Uhura & Spock

It was entertaining but I don't think it was Oscar worthy. I would rather hope things like Public Enemies and Up would get in before that. And I completely diasgree that sci hi shouldn't be allowed in. How is that fair at all? Because they're set in different times or planets they don't show good acting, writing and story? Give me a break. Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Terminator 2, ET, Alien, Blade Runner? All amazing movies. I think some people just don't like sci fi, but that doesn't mean they aren't Great movies.

The great thing about this star trek was that you didn't have to know the whole history behind all of the characters to enjoy it. it wasn't like a remake it was a complete re-imagination of star trek. my parents who are both star trek fans and knew back story of the characters could appreciate the writing for the jokes and mannerisms of those characters and my brother and i who didn't get the full joke enjoyed it as well. the age range between us (36 years and i'm 17) also captures how they really had something for everyone it was exciting but it wasn't a pure action movie, i think it had heart too.

I think so! I thought Star Trek was fantastic...and I disagree with what a previous poster said, I thought SlumDog Millionaire wasn't that good, and neither was CCOBB... I would vote for Star Trek, sci-fi movie or not.

I'm kind of split on this: No, because Star Trek isn't really on par with the thoughtfulness of a lot of Oscar-worthy movies, like Slumdog or Milk or Frost/Nixon last year. Yes, because it is miles better than any other "action" movie that has com out this year. The acting is good, the story is decent, and the movie is just overall well-made. A nomination for a movie like Star Trek or Dark Knight -- even though they don't stand a chance at actually winning -- may encourage the film industry to make better, smarter, more interesting big blockbuster movies, instead of just thinking that they can slap a franchise name on a crappy movie (Uh. GI Joe, anyone?) and expect everyone to go see it.

I don't think so, just because of major holes and inconsistencies that occurred in the plot. I thought the acting was wonderful, and the performances should be recognized, but the story meandered and wasn't thoughtful when it came to the details.

Absolutely. I am a big Star Trek fan and I loved it. It kept true to the original series, was well written and a great overall film. I am also a big movie buff and some of the movies the Academy puts up are crazy. Sometimes they just get it all backwards. Chicago winning over Lord Of The Rings The Two Towers or Michael Clayton being nominated at all? Most of the time the most legendary movies don't even make it, yet in 10 years no one will remember Slumdog but they will remember The Dark Knight and it wasn't even nominated.

I think they should get rid of the Animated movie category since they are going to have 10 options- I was so mad Wall-E couldnt be nominated for Best overall Picture. Not that it could have beat Slumdog, but still-

Certain movies don't belong at the Oscars... "Sci-Fi" movies are just not... right. I can't really explain why, except to say that, to me & those I know, the Oscars, Golden Globes, BAFTA awards are more... serious than, say, the People's Choice Awards, MMVA's & the one with the surfboards. - Better yet, leave movies likie "Dark Knight" & Star Trek" to Sci-Fi Awards' shows. Besides which I read somewhere that Ledge had second thoughts about doing DK & wanted out - since his contract listed "pay or play" (where he'd get paid either way) he deliberately played his part WAY over-the-top so he'd be fired. Whether that's true or not, I can't say. - What I can say is that the Academy Awards gets longer & more BORING with every passing year & declining ratings show it. Let's face it, the ratings aren't like they were 10-15 years ago. But of course that doesn't stop TPTB from trying to line their pockets... I can see it now - " Come join us for the Academy Awards! 5 HOURS LONG!" - I'd rather watch paint dry.
